There are many structures in your back that can be a cause of pain some of which include the discs in-between each vertebra, the muscles that attach to your spine or even the nerves that exit your spine.
Pain can begin for a variety of reasons such as poor posture, age related degeneration or perhaps a sporting injury.

Dull aching pain that’s often worse in the mornings
Sharp pain when doing particular movements like bending or twisting
Morning stiffness
Radiating pain into groin or down the legs
